Came to Penetang in 1840, when 11 years old. His family and some neighbours started from Holland Landing in a canoe and went down the Holland River to the South end of Lake Simcoe. They then crossed Lake Simcoe to land at Orillia, the Southern end of the Coldwater Portage (now Hwy. 12). They proceeded Northwest up the portage 23km to Coldwater, then by batteaux to Fort Penetanguishene which had been established in 1793. Penetanguishene was the aboriginal name for ”White Rolling Sand “. The first civilian home at that location wasn’t built until 1828.
