Learned the business of shoemaking and that of tanner and currier at Lyn, Ont. (near Brockville) settled in Smith’s Falls, Ont., working at the two locations alternately during the summer and winter.

Came to Penetang about 1835; where he built the first tannery, on a small creek at the head of the bay, to supply the raw material to ply his trade.
