While still a young boy, went West to Alberta with his brother Martin.They worked building irrigation canals in the Provence. Martin stayed and eventually became a wheat farmer. James at some time around 1900 went up to the Yukon, presumably to join the Gold Rush. Nothing known at this time as to when and why he came to Kalama, Washington where he owned a Pool and Billiard Parlor with another man. When he married Anna Wood -Kirby, he sold his interest in the Pool Parlor and started an Ice Cream parlor. It was almost a general store - selling sporting goods, candy, canned goods, tobacco products, etc. He continued in the store until he was elected County Comissioneer, in November of 1932.He became a Naturalized Citizen in Kalama,Washington on January 11, 1916. The County Seat of Cowlitz County was in Kalama, Washington at that time.
